Drum Making Class

In cultures all around the world, the drum has been used throughout history in ceremonies, for healing, and as a tool to help connect to the Spirit world and Creation. The drum is known to connect our hearts to the heartbeat of Mother Earth.  A Shaman’s drum is referred to as his horse, as he uses it to ride to other worlds.

In this class will we create a sacred space using intention, ceremony, and gratitude where you will then be guided in the process of creating your own 15” Elk Medicine Drum, along with a personalized drum stick. This single sided hand drum is crafted using a wooden hoop or frame, with an Elk rawhide animal skin for its face and lacing. The lacing that holds the rawhide skin on the hoop, intertwines beautifully on the back to create the drum’s handle.

Creating a drum is a spiritual endeavor. We will take time along this journey to honor and connect with our ancestors, along with the animals and plants used in the creation of our drums.  We invite you to join us on this wonderful experience.

Rattle Making Workshops


These Rattle Making Workshops can be held here on our hilltop at Soaring Hawk Connections in Van Etten, or we can bring the workshop to you. If you are fairly local, then we need a minimum of 5 people to bring this class to you. If you are farther away, contact me for more information.

This is a two part class, held on two separate days.  You will be instructed on how to create a rattle using animal rawhide and other gifts from nature.

Crafting of this rattle will be done in a ceremonious fashion, creating with intent, while honoring the animal, plant and mineral energies being used in the process.

A multitude of different animal hides, sticks, stones, crystals, fur and other items will be supplied so that you can create a one of a kind rattle that is uniquely your own.

The rattle making process needs to be done in two steps. Once you have crafted your rattle head, it needs time to dry before your final creation can come together. Therefore, it is necessary to attend both rattle making sessions.

While these rattles make for great musical instruments that can be played at drum circles or to accompany other music, these rattles make great healing tools. These are perfect for those who do sound healing and other energy work. By choosing the energies that are going into the crafting of your rattle, such as specific animal energies with the hides or crystal energy with the rattle's voice, it makes for a wonderful healing tool. 

Ideas:
  • Create a deer hide rattle with rose quartz filling to work with the heart
  • Create a buffalo hide rattle with black tourmaline to protect and clear away negative energy

All supplies and tools needed to create your rattle will be provided.

Cost of the workshop varies based on number of students, location and the materials used.
